What can I expect from my initial consultation?

During your consultation, your Dietitian will usually cover the following:

  • An assessment of your medical history, family medical history, current medications, recent blood results, medical tests and any current health concerns.

  • Your reason for seeking a dietetic consultation will be discussed e.g. current concerns about health/diet and goals/outcomes that you are hoping to achieve.

  • Your body composition, including your weight, height, BMI, waist circumference and hip circumference will be assessed if desired. Your weight history may also be discussed if relevant e.g. previous weight loss/gain experiences.

  • Your nutritional requirements for calories, protein and fluid (others may be included if relevant) will be calculated.

  • A full dietary analysis of your usual diet will be completed which will allow you and the dietitian to assess the adequacy of your current diet and assess what changes may be needed to help you reach your nutritional goals. Previous dieting experiences will be discussed if applicable.

  • Digestive function will be discussed as appropriate as well as relevant lifestyle factors such as sleep, physical activity and stress.

  • Your nutritional goals will be discussed and a collaborative nutritional plan developed which will take into account your likes and dislikes.

  • Dietary advice will be given tailored to your unique needs to help you achieve your goals.

  • A starter meal plan with ideas on how to apply the nutrition information into your day-to-day life can be provided if desired.

  • Following your assessment you will receive: A follow-up email with the key points that were discussed during the consultation, a personalised nutrition plan including the dietary analysis of your usual diet, meal planning guidance (if required) and some further written information e.g. dietary advice sheets that may be relevant.

  • If you book a follow-up appointment after your initial consultation, you gain access to a free email support service which gives you the opportunity to catch-up with Maria via email until your next appointment (limit of 2 emails between sessions).

The consultation is always individualised and tailored to your needs, which means that the consultation structure may be different than described above.

What can I expect from a follow-up/review consultation?

A follow-up consultation is half an hour long, and will usually cover the following:

  • A review of your progress since your last appointment.

  • If desired another full body composition analysis, including a weight check, BMI, waist circumference and hip circumference.

  • A discussion around what you feel went well and what you struggled with since the last appointment.

  • Adjustments and modification to the current nutrition plan as appropriate.

  • Further goal setting to help you achieve your desired goals.

  • Further nutrition education about topics relevant to you.

  • A follow-up email with your body composition details, key points discussed and updated goals.

The consultation is always individualised and tailored to your needs, which means that the consultation structure may be different than described above.
